Porquerolles: a land of art and history
An island through the ages
Porquerolles has seen Celts, Romans, pirates and monks in search of silence. In turn Greek, Roman, then the scene of battles and pillaging, the island changed hands several times, between kings, knights and adventurers. In 1912, a Belgian businessman, François-Joseph Fournier, bought the island as a wedding present for his wife. Together, they contributed to its development by building roads and orchards, turning Porquerolles into a prosperous agricultural estate. In 1971, the French government took over and entrusted management of the island to the Parc national de Port-Cros, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
