The Ile de Porquerolles

A little slice of paradise in the Var region, Porquerolles is the largest of the Iles d'Or islands. It plays host to a range of activities, from cycling to diving! On the island, you will find 54 km of marked footpaths and special trails for mountain bikes.  It is very easy to find rental shops for mountain bikes (for adults and children), road bikes, or electric bikes. If you prefer water sports, you'll be spoilt for choice with jet-ski, diving, sailing, rowing, sea kayak, canoeing, and more!

The story

The history of the island has been shaped by many civilizations (Celts, Ligurians, Etruscans, Greeks and Romans), and recent archaeological digs have uncovered several sites. The island has been inhabited since antiquity, yet its natural environment has been preserved. From the 16th century, it become a strategic stronghold with for Saint-Agathe, then the Fort du Langoustier and the Fort de l’Alycastre. The village was founded in 1820, the lighthouse was built in 1837, and the church in 1850. In 1912, the island was purchased by a businessman, Mr Fournier, who presented it to his wife as a gift. It was during this period that the vineyards and market gardening developed. Today, the Ile de Porquerolles is managed by Port-Cros national park. In 2012, it was listed as a "Cœur de Parc National" (heart of a national park).
